The ancient Egyptians and Greeks practiced inner cleansing, as did traditional Chinese and Indian civilisations. Each of these cultures realised the many health and wellbeing benefits of this natural treatment and the fact that it has endured for so long and has spread so widely is a testament to its effectiveness.
Up until the late 1920's, many doctors had colonic systems in their surgeries and similar equipment was found in hospitals too. Articles dealing with colon health frequently appeared in prestigious medical and scientific journals until the early 1930's. Unfortunately, today, hospitals have largely replaced colonics with cheaper purgatives and laxatives, which are not always effective and can be quite unpleasant.
While the treatment has taken many forms over the centuries, the essence of the therapy has remained the same – a gentle wash out of the colon or large intestine, using warm water to remove waste matter, rehydrate and exercise the bowel.
At icolonic, I use the closed system, with clean, filtered warm water to cleanse the colon gently and easily, with no fuss, no mess and no smell. The treatment should be regarded as normal and as natural as any other part of your regular health and wellbeing regime. Many clients have colonics on a regular basis to complement other healthy lifestyle choices such as good nutrition, stress management and regular exercise.
Your first appointment will usually last about an hour and 15 minutes. It will include a consultation, medical questionnaire and a full explanation of the equipment and procedure.
The gathered information will assist me with considering some of the possible causes of your specific concerns and together during the actual treatment, we can discuss positive steps to move towards bringing your physical and emotional well-being back into balance.
The therapy itself takes around 50 minutes, during which modern, hygienic equipment gently cleanses your colon using warm filtered water, in a simple, dignified procedure.
Your complete discretion is assured
There’s no need to be concerned or embarrassed about the treatment. You’ll be given privacy to change and have access to private toilet facilities. You will only be exposed for a few seconds for the insertion of the speculum, and after that you’ll remain covered throughout the treatment.
Warm filtered water is introduced into your colon through a small tube called a speculum that is gently inserted into your rectum. As the warm water enters, you’ll feel a fullness as your colon fills up, then a relaxing feeling as it empties. The water pressure and temperature are carefully controlled, and all waste is drained away discretely.
This filling and emptying is repeated several times and massage is applied to your abdomen. Colonic hydrotherapy reaches the entire length of your large intestine, with the massage helping to ensure you benefit from an effective cleanse.

Before beginning treatment at icolonic, we will discuss your personal detoxing and health goals, health history, explain the treatment and address any concerns or questions you might have.
The session will begin with the insertion while laying on your left side. The speculum is inserted (no-one likes that bit, not painful just a bit whoops), then you will roll onto your back with your knees bent and be completely covered up for privacy. The water is then turned on and we begin the fills and releases with you to slowly and gently loosen the compacted waste matter in your colon and allow your body to release it. You will be able to view everything that comes out of your colon, and I will explain what it means. Once you have finished your treatment, the water will be turned off, the speculum carefully removed, and you will sit on the toilet to let gravity do the rest. Once you are finished, you will get dressed and I will discuss recommendations and a treatment plan.
Colonics should not be painful, however depending on your toxicity and the level of compaction in your colon, your first session may be a bit uncomfortable as all of these toxins are stirred up to be released. Some clients experience nausea which goes away immediately after the toxicity is flushed from the body. Others experience mild to moderate cramping (a bit like a period pain or diarrhoea) which again goes away once the body releases the toxicity. The feeling of release is euphoric and after your first session you should feel lighter, cleaner and refreshed.
Please wear your regular clothes, you will be asked to strip from the waist down but will be given a gown to wear for privacy. You will be covered by a further sheet once the insertion has been done.
Yes! Even if your bowel moves a solid 2-3 times per day with ease. We are exposed daily to high levels of toxins in the environment—in the food we eat, and, in the products, we put on our skin. That coupled with high levels of stress can put us into toxic overload which can affect us both physically and emotionally.
Colonics not only cleanse the bowel but also help to detoxify the liver, bloodstream and kidneys while providing a release for the mind, body and soul. They have so much to offer!
Yes, you can. All your release should take place at the clinic. However, if it’s your first colonic, we recommend coming at a time when you can relax afterwards as you may be exhausted with a large toxin release. You may also find the need to go to the loo several more times throughout the day as waste will have shifted around. We also say “never trust a fart just after a colonic” so you may want to keep that in mind for a few hours after your treatment.
